Campaign Monitor: Compare Placement Before and After a Template Redesign

To assess a Campaign Monitor redesign, compare the saved old template and new template with the same sender, message purpose and controlled recipient observations.

To assess a Campaign Monitor redesign, compare the saved old template and new template with the same sender, message purpose and controlled recipient observations. Review appearance separately from placement. A successful browser preview or design-and-spam test does not establish the folder where an actual received campaign copy was observed.

Preserve a real baseline

Save the previous template, its plain-text alternative and the relevant campaign settings before editing. Record its version and date. If the earlier campaign has no usable mailbox observations, describe the new test as a current evaluation rather than claiming a measured before-and-after improvement.

Create a comparison specification covering the subject, main content, primary link, required footer, sender and tracking behavior. A redesign can intentionally change several visual elements together. Label that as a redesign-package comparison, and avoid attributing a result to one image or font without a narrower experiment.

Inventory changes that affect the message

Compare the rendered HTML, not just two screenshots. The new template may introduce image hosts, social links, navigation, nested markup or a different text alternative. Record the domains and structures that changed. A button with the same caption may still point to another tracked destination.

Keep the central meaning equivalent. If the redesign also adds a discount, changes urgency or removes explanatory text, those are content changes worth documenting. Otherwise a visual comparison becomes an unacknowledged comparison of different offers.

Use Campaign Monitor's design checks appropriately

Campaign Monitor documents desktop and mobile previews plus test emails. Its design-and-spam testing also provides rendering screenshots and filter checks. Use these to review layout, missing images, reading order and likely compatibility problems before any broader send.

The official testing guidance distinguishes preview behavior for personalization and dynamic content from quick test copies using fallback terms. Review the intended contact context rather than accepting the fallback as proof that every dynamic block works. Retain the final saved template after editor processing as your comparison artifact.

Observe representative campaign copies

Create an LDM test for each version using the intended sender. Take the current recipients supplied by each run and use a temporary, isolated campaign audience. Send originals through the relevant Campaign Monitor path, preserving normal required footer and unsubscribe behavior. Do not forward an old personal copy as the baseline route.

Keep provider composition and observation times comparable. Record the template version, submission time and available message identifier beside every mailbox observation. Stop the bounded workflow and prevent the temporary audience from entering continuing campaigns. This guide executes no send and claims no native LDM connection.

Evaluate two independent outcomes

First evaluate whether the new message is readable and complete in the tested clients. Then evaluate observed placement, keeping primary Inbox, category folders, Spam and missing observations distinct. A beautiful message in Spam has a placement question; an unreadable message in Inbox has a design defect. Neither should hide the other.

A difference in a small panel does not identify a single cause. Provider context, timing and sender history can vary even with careful controls. If the redesign underperforms repeatedly in comparable observations, use its change inventory to choose a narrower test rather than reverting unrelated brand or accessibility improvements blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Does a design-and-spam test replace real folder observation?

No. It supplies rendering and filter evidence under its own method. Record actual received locations separately when making a placement claim.

Can I use last month's campaign results as the baseline?

Only with explicit limitations. Different content, recipients, route and time make it an observational comparison, not a controlled redesign test.

Should I delete all images after a worse result?

No universal remedy follows from one panel. Inspect the changed message and test a specific hypothesis while preserving required information and reader usability.
