A Klaviyo campaign and an event-triggered flow can share a template while receiving different personalization data and following different eligibility paths. Compare their final rendered messages and actual sending routes. A campaign preview using a profile cannot by itself validate an event-based email's order details, product list or trigger-specific links.

Choose the real comparison
Decide whether the question concerns the same creative content across two delivery contexts, or the actual campaign and flow messages your customers receive. The first requires strong content parity. The second may intentionally contain different information and should be described as a comparison of complete configurations.
Record the campaign or flow version, sender, message purpose, tracking settings and expected eligibility. Do not treat a marketing campaign and a service notification as interchangeable merely because their layouts match. Preserve the required consent and unsubscribe behavior for each message type.
Select the correct preview data
Klaviyo's editor guidance distinguishes profile-based previews from metric-triggered previews. For an event-based flow, select the relevant event data source and an example event. A profile alone can lack the properties used by the message. For a campaign, choose a profile representative of the selected audience.
Prepare safe fixtures that include the fields needed by each version. For an order-related email, use a non-sensitive example with a small item list and harmless references. For a missing optional property, define and review the fallback. Do not send customer purchase history or usable private action links to test mailboxes.
Inspect the generated differences
Compare subject, personalized greeting, event blocks, item links, signature and plain-text content. Check whether the event generated another domain or a recipient-specific destination that the campaign does not contain. A shared template name is not proof of equivalent final content.
Klaviyo's test guidance explains that a realistic campaign check can use a small internal list, while a live metric-triggered flow requires the relevant trigger action. An editor test is useful but should be labeled with its actual context rather than reported as evidence that the real event path executed.
Run two bounded paths
For external observation, create LDM tests for the intended sender and obtain the current recipient addresses. Use an isolated permitted campaign path and a separate safe event fixture for the flow. Ensure that test contacts cannot enter unrelated automations or receive continuing customer messages.
Record the trigger evidence, message submission time and available identifiers for each path. If a flow message is skipped or delayed, investigate its eligibility and workflow state before interpreting an absent copy as a filtering issue. A manually sent template copy does not prove the trigger conditions worked.
This guide does not execute a campaign, create a purchase or send email. It assumes the operator controls a permitted test route and makes no native-integration claim.
Read results in context
Match each received copy to its path and retain its observed folder and measurement time. Report category folders separately from primary Inbox and Spam, and preserve missing observations with sender-side evidence. Avoid averaging the two paths into one number that hides which message was observed.
A difference does not prove that campaigns or flows are inherently better for placement. Their recipients, contexts, content and timing can differ. The useful next step comes from the actual difference inventory: data mapping, eligibility, sender configuration or message content, rather than a broad platform judgment.
Frequently asked questions
Why does an event block disappear in preview?
Check whether the selected data source is the relevant event and includes the referenced property. A profile-only preview may not supply event data.
Can I duplicate a campaign as a flow and assume it is equivalent?
No. Review the data source, trigger conditions and final generated content. Reuse of design does not validate the new path.
Does a correct preview prove the flow sent the message?
No. Preserve actual trigger and submission evidence for that claim, then match it with the mailbox observation.
